LEARN FRENCH WITH US

At the Alliance Française de Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, we’re proud to offer engaging, effective French courses taught by experienced instructors who love sharing the language and culture. All courses are exclusive to members. To become a member, please visit our Member Application page. 

The levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) for each course refer to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). You can read more about the CEFR levels here. If you are not sure of your level, or which course is right for you, you can take the free placement test linked below on this page.

    Ready to jumpstart your journey to French? Award-winning prof Gigi Kuhn will offer a one-week intensive courses for beginner-level French speakers. These intensives are a great way to learn the basics and get prepared for upcoming in-person course offerings. 

    COURSE INFORMATION:

    • Level: A1 (Absolute Beginners)

    • Schedule: January 12, 13, 14, 15 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and January 16 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

    At this level, you are already able to hold a conversation on various topics. In this course, we will read and listen to authentic French materials at a normal pace, such as podcasts, newspaper articles, and other resources. We will discuss them in class to better understand the language and discover French-speaking culture. You will also have the opportunity to prepare and give presentations in French.

    This course will allow you to improve your reading and listening comprehension, as well as your ability to express yourself with greater ease and confidence.

    Level: B2 (Upper intermediate)

    This entry-level course is designed for complete beginners to gain competency in French. Students will develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills necessary to identify vocabulary terms and utilize proper grammatical structures in French. Preparation outside of class and active participation in class are necessary to succeed. Assignments will be assisted by texts, visual aids, and cultural reflection. Students will become familiar with engaging effectively in a variety of conversations in French.

    We will reinforce your knowledge of verb tenses, improve your listening comprehension, and enhance your oral and written expression using podcasts, short stories, and newspaper articles. You will learn to express your opinions clearly and discuss current events. The main objective is to develop your ability to participate in a conversation fluently and grasp the main points of a discussion or text on familiar or current topics. By the end of this course, you will be able to handle most situations encountered while traveling in a French-speaking region and give your opinion during a conversation.

    Join our expert and engaging teacher, Gigi Kuhn, for a beautiful course on Les Beaux Châteaux de France. This is a small group class, taught virtually with personal attention for each student, and is exclusive to members of The Alliance Française de Pittsburgh.

PLACEMENT TESTS

Before you begin taking classes with us, we'd like to get to know a little bit about your level of French, so we can place you in the proper classes.

We use the free TCF examine, which tests your oral comprehension, language structure, and reading comprehension.

After completing the test, please take a screenshot of your results and email the picture to admin@afpgh.org. The results do not download.

OUR TEACHERS

Marie-Françoise Bernard

Marie-Françoise grew up in France, studied English language and literature at the University of Lyon and taught English in Chamonix. She has taught French at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., and to many businessmen and women at Ceran Lingua International in Spa, Belgium. She has been with the Alliance Française de Pittsburgh since 2012. Marie-Françoise likes walking in the woods, has a passion for Argentine tango and she loves sharing her language with her students.


Brett Wells

Currently, Brett serves as the French language program coordinator at Pitt. His interest in French initially came out of his studies in music at Drake University. He later studied applied linguistics and French at Stanford, and  in Quebec, and France and is particularly interested in language pedagogy for adult learners. He is still a musician and continues to play organ and piano.


Gigi Kuhn

Born in Saigon, raised in Paris, studied in Montreal, and worked in London, Gigi now has called Chicago her home since the year 2000. Gigi teaches French to all ages and at all levels. In 2015, the Chicago chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) awarded Gigi its distinguished "Prix d'Excellence" for outstanding contributions to the teaching of French language and culture.


Spencer Floriane Fricard

Born and raised in France, I earned my master's degree in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and I am now about to complete my PhD in French at the University of Pittsburgh. I taught French at the undergraduate level at both these universities. Long before I taught French to British students at a high school in France and, while on exchange in the UK, I tutored students at Manchester Metropolitan University. I truly enjoy sharing the language, as well as the many cultural perspectives of the Francophoneworld­ whether from France, Tunisia, Louisiana or Québec
